Food & drink

Mixed

Buffet-heavy dining that fills you up without wowing you, with the Mexican and Italian à la cartes as the bright spots. Variety thins out on weekends when local Dominican menus take over, and nothing is open late.

Dining overview

Features one international buffet restaurant and three à la carte dinner restaurants serving Mexican, Italian, and fusion cuisine.

Beach

Mixed

A wide, beautiful stretch of Cabarete sand that is world-class for kitesurfers and windsurfers, but a poor fit for a classic swim-and-lounge beach vacation. Expect strong wind, powerful waves, and persistent vendors.

Editorial beach rating

Wide sandy beach on Cabarete known for excellent windsurfing and kitesurfing, uncrowded with loungers available.

Pools

Strong

One main pool plus a smaller quiet pool near the Italian restaurant, both clean and well-liked when the crowds are thin. Weekends and local day-visitor influx can leave it packed with limited seating and no poolside drink service.

Editorial pool rating

Two outdoor pools plus a children’s pool; generally uncrowded with ample loungers; no swim‑up bar.

Rooms & suites

The resort has 314 rooms and suites with private balconies or terraces. Room categories include Superior, Superior Ocean View, and Suite Ocean Front.

Room details here are AI-assisted, compiled from the resort's own website and public sources. Categories and names change often — confirm the exact room when you book.

What’s included

Strong

At the right price (roughly under CAD 1,700 for a week), this is a legitimate four-star bargain and a repeat-visit favorite. Pay any more and the dated rooms, limited food, and thin amenities stop adding up.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Stretch

Fine for laid-back couples who want a walkable Cabarete base, but not a romance-forward resort: one bar, early closings, and persistent beach vendors chip away at the mood. Several women reported uncomfortable attention from male staff or hawkers.

Families

Stretch

Entertainment team is a hit with kids and the property is compact enough to manage, but the powerful surf and wind make the beach genuinely unsafe for little swimmers. Parents of babies and toddlers found workable quiet corners; parents of older kids found little to do.

Peace & Quiet

Strong

A small, low-density property with a relaxed daytime pace and a lively but not thumping evening show. The single-bar setup means everything winds down early, which suits early-to-bed travelers more than night owls.

Full‑service spa, fitness center, nightly entertainment/theater/disco, kids’ club, playground, sports (tennis, beach volleyball), wide non‑motorized water sports, excursions nearby.

“FILTHY HOTEL WITH COCKROACHES in the rooms. Every weekend, starting Friday, the locals descend and it's chaos everywhere! Not enough beach towels. They knock on the door at 8 am every morning to wash the towels. I'm here, disgusted. I'm staying because it's a group trip; otherwise, I wouldn't even spend a night here! It stinks of sewage, the beach is barely developed, and it's impossible to swim because of the frequent high waves. People died a few weeks ago, and we're told not to go into...”

“The best value resort in the entire Puerto Plata area. The service from waiters Robert, Eduardo, and Estefany was outstanding, the beach was beautiful, and the food, while not very varied, was quite good. I highly recommend it.”

“I travel frequently to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, and I don't consider myself a difficult person. Despite some positive aspects, the Viva Tangerine is among the hotels I enjoyed the least in the Dominican Republic.

It's a lovely little resort of a comfortable size. The grounds are very clean and well-maintained, as are the exteriors of the buildings. There's a beautiful large pool and a large beach lined with magnificent palm trees, perfect for long walks along the...”

 • buffet and a‑la‑carte food quality inconsistent

 • Constant wind, sand-blasting on loungers

What you should know

What to Know

This is a small, older property in windy Cabarete, not a manicured mega-resort, and it comes with a Viva membership sales push, spotty front-desk service, and unreliable hot water in some rooms. Book with eyes open and it delivers; expect a polished all-inclusive and you will be frustrated.

Wi‑Fi is free only in designated areas and may cost for in‑room; safe may have fee; book a‑la‑carte dinners early; beach good for kitesurfing but waves may be strong, supervise kids.
