“Compact, energetic Playacar all-inclusive with a standout beach and lively entertainment”
Guests consistently praise the location on a lovely beach and the energetic entertainment team and friendly staff
Food & drink
MixedBuffet is a coin flip: many find it varied with excellent breakfast omelets, others call it repetitive, greasy, or downright poor. The à la carte venues, especially Cosmopolita, are the real highlight and worth booking.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Cosmopolita à la carte is a standout
- Made-to-order breakfast omelets
- Italian and Mexican specialties praised
- Viva Azteca walk-in with no booking
Heads up
- Buffet repetitive and limited on seafood
- Some report cold or undercooked dishes
- Occasional stomach upset reports
- Better food gated behind Viva Club tier
Dining overview
Five venues anchored by the La Terraza international buffet, plus à la carte options for Mexican (Hacienda Don Diego), Italian (Miramare), and Mediterranean (Portofino). Reviews describe the food as adequate and varied but not a standout, with the à la cartes not always feeling distinct from the buffet.

Beach
StrongWhen the sea cooperates, you get a wide stretch of soft sand, warm calm water, and plentiful shaded loungers, one of the best beach values in the area. Sargassum is the wild card and can be heavy in season.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Wide beach with soft white sand
- Warm, calm swimming water
- Plentiful loungers under palm shade
- Falcons deployed to deter beach birds
Heads up
- Heavy sargassum in some months
- Day-pass visitors claim chairs early
- One report of sewage odor near beach
Soft white sand beachfront with easy access, ample loungers and shaded areas

Pools
MixedTwo pools including an adults-only option with swim-up service, but they run small for the crowd and chair-hogging is rampant. Water quality complaints surface when the pool bar party runs late.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Adults-only pool available
- Swim-up pool bar
- Pool area centrally located
Heads up
- Pools feel small when full
- Chair hoarding leaves guests without seats
- Drinking in the pool affects water quality
An outdoor main pool with a swim-up bar anchors the action, and there's a separate adult pool for quieter sunbathing. Pools are modest in scale rather than dramatic — fine for a dip between beach sessions.

What’s included
StrongFor the price you get a beach and entertainment package that punches above its weight, but the Viva Club tier system quietly withholds better drinks and perks from standard guests. Solid budget play, not a premium experience.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Strong beach for the price point
- Top-notch nightly theater shows
- 10 minutes from Playa del Carmen center
- Reasonable rates for Riviera Maya
Heads up
- Non-Club guests get lower-quality alcohol
- Surprise charges reported at checkout
- Rooms and lobby overdue for refresh
Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.
Amenities & activities
Couples
StretchFine for a laid-back couples trip if you keep expectations modest, but honeymoon packages have been mishandled and rooms can disappoint. Romance is not this resort's headline.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Adults-only pool section
- Jungle grounds feel tropical and lush
- Cosmopolita is a genuine date-night spot
- Bicycle rentals for exploring Playa
Heads up
- Honeymoon perks unreliable at check-in
- Poolside noise late into the night
- Rooms and mattresses feel dated
Families
Good fitA workable family pick with a kids club, animation team, and gated security, though tired rooms and a beach chair shortage from day-pass crowds create friction. Best for easygoing families, not those expecting polish.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Kids club and daycare on site
- Energetic animation team engages children
- Gated, secured property entry
- Circus and evening shows are hits
Heads up
- Day-pass locals fill beach chairs
- Limited unseasoned food for babies
- One report of bed bugs in room
Peace & Quiet
MixedPlayacar itself is a quiet enclave, but inside the resort the pool bar keeps going day and night with singing, drunk guests keeping light sleepers awake. Choose a room away from the pool and lobby.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Playacar neighborhood is peaceful
- Jungle grounds feel serene by day
- Gated entry keeps outside noise down
Heads up
- Pool bar noisy late into the night
- Early morning grounds maintenance with blowers
- Lobby entertainment carries to nearby rooms
A full daily activity program is the calling card here — trapeze, paddleboard, tennis, fitness classes, table tennis, and a nightclub with live shows and acrobats. Spa, kids' club, kids' play area, and gift shops round things out on a walkable, green property.
Water sports included
- kayaking
- snorkeling
- paddleboarding

“The hotel is in line with its category and price, nothing more.
The reception staff is disconcertingly slow.
The cocktails at the various bars are very sweet and of poor quality.
The room's minibar was empty, not even a bottle of water!

The food at the buffet, however, is good and quite varied.
The rooms are particularly damp despite very little rain. Nothing dries, and sleeping in damp sheets is particularly unpleasant.
The Miramare restaurant is to be avoided!...”

“I had stayed at Viva Maya by Wyndham in August for my destination wedding and oh my.... this was one amazing trip. I had booked the trip through Sunwing and then once all the details were taken care of, I was transfered over to the resorts wedding planner Carolina and Christian and they were amazing!! Every detail was taken care of and they were able to always make the impossible happen. They took so well care of us it was more than we could have asked for. They setup 1 big supper for us all...”

high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Viva Azteca takes walk-ins
- Cosmopolita worth reserving early

CUN airport is roughly an hour away by transfer. Note that there is no in-room dining, food cannot be removed from the buffet, and the in-room safe carries a usage fee — bring small bills for tipping. The wristband must be returned at checkout or a replacement fee applies, so guard it carefully and report any defects in writing early in your stay.

- In-room safe carries a usage fee
- Wristband loss/damage incurs a fee that must be settled before airport transfer departs
- Wi-Fi is included but can be spotty in rooms
- Smaller-footprint resort — easy to navigate but fewer pools and venues than mega-resorts
