Why travelers love it

“Lagoon-side Riu Palace with an upgraded Elite Club and free shuttle to sister beachfront resorts”

Guests consistently rave about the staff, particularly the pool entertainment team and Elite Club servers who remember names by day two. It sits on the lagoon side of Cancun's Hotel Zone rather than directly on the beach, but a complimentary shuttle connects you to Riu's oceanfront properties for sand and surf.

Food & drink

Strong

Buffet handles breakfast and lunch with wide variety, while five à la carte restaurants cover dinner, with the steakhouse emerging as the clear standout. The Elite Club restaurant underwhelms compared to the main venues.

Dining overview

Buffet handles breakfast and lunch with wide variety, and five à la carte restaurants rotate for dinner. The steakhouse gets specific praise from recent guests; the Elite Club restaurant is more hit-or-miss depending on your tastes.

Beach

Mixed

The resort sits on the Nichupté lagoon rather than the Caribbean, so the on-property waterfront is not a swim beach. A free shuttle to sister Riu beachfront resorts is the workaround.

The resort itself is on the lagoon side of Boulevard Kukulkan rather than directly on the Caribbean, so beach time typically means hopping the free shuttle to a sister Riu property on the ocean.

Pools

Strong

The main pool is the social heart of the resort with music, games, and fast drink service from morning on. The Elite Club pool is quieter and cabana-equipped but otherwise unremarkable.

Editorial pool rating

There are multiple pools including a swim-up bar and an Elite Club pool for upgraded guests. Reviews describe the Elite pool as pleasant but fairly basic, with the main draw being the attentive poolside service and lively daytime entertainment.

What’s included

Strong

Consistent five-star feedback on service, cleanliness, and rooms suggests the Palace tier delivers on its price point. The Elite Club upgrade is generally considered worth it for the cabanas and perks, even if the dedicated restaurant and pool are just okay.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Good fit

A lively lagoon-side Palace that works well for couples who want polished service and upgraded perks without going adults-only. The Elite Club cabana and pool add a romantic layer worth the splurge.

Families

Stretch

All-ages Riu Palace with pool entertainment that pulls in every age group, though there is no dedicated kids club on property. Fine for families who want a lively pool scene rather than structured kids programming.

Peace & Quiet

Mixed

This is the lively end of the Riu Palace spectrum: music by the pool all day, entertainment team running games, and an animated social atmosphere. Not the pick for a silent retreat.

Expect the standard Riu Palace package: spa, fitness area, all-day poolside entertainment with games and music, evening shows, and a free shuttle connecting to other Riu resorts in the Hotel Zone.

“One of best Riu, very friendly stuff and best beach for all Rius in Cancun.
We stay before in in Riu Peninsula but that one is so bad now, stuff is so mean and there is no beach to enjoy.
If you not sure which to choose the Kukulkan is the best. We had a great time there and we will consider to comeback.
We will definitely no go back to Peninsula.”

“Overall great experience and loved the location!
The staff is friendly and helpful, but the food service is a bit slow. There were a few times at the restaurant that I'd wish that I just did the self-service buffet. Rooms are spacious, clean, and I loved the little evening check-ins, pillow chocolates, and cute towel figures. The bed was not the most comfortable, but overall, I enjoyed my room and stay. The Elite club perks are definitely worth the extra cost!”

“I'll just say 10/10. Service, cleanliness. And above all, the beach is always clean. The food is 10/10.”

Rosie answers from this resort’s guest reviews and our research — with quotes.

Know before you book

 • weak drinks at the pool bar
 • Elite Club pool and restaurant underwhelm some guests
 • not directly beachfront
 • Lagoon-side, not a beach resort in the traditional sense

What you should know

What to Know

This is a lagoon-side Palace, not oceanfront, so plan on using the complimentary shuttle to Riu's beach properties for sand-and-surf days. Consider the Elite Club upgrade for cabanas but skip its restaurant in favor of the main steakhouse.

WATCH OUT: Seasonal heads-up

 • Sargassum seaweed can affect Cancun beaches from roughly April through August
 • Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking September and October

Book the Elite Club upgrade if you want the reserved pool, cabana access, and a la carte breakfast, though opinions on the Elite restaurant itself are mixed. Because the property is lagoon-side, plan on using the complimentary Riu shuttle when you want a beach day. Pool bar drinks tend to be light on alcohol; the lobby bar pours stronger, more elaborate cocktails. Tipping is not required but is genuinely appreciated by the pool and entertainment staff who make the stay.

Good to know

 • Property is on the lagoon side, not directly on the beach
 • Free shuttle connects to sister Riu resorts with beach access
 • Elite Club upgrade unlocks a separate pool, cabanas, and restaurant
 • Pool bar drinks pour weak; head to the lobby bar for stronger cocktails
 • Entertainment team runs games and music at the pool throughout the day
