Why travelers love it
“Lively Riu all-inclusive on the Sea of Cortez with a fun swim-up bar”
Guests come for the energetic Riu party atmosphere, friendly entertainment team, and consistently good buffet breakfasts. The beach is coarse and unswimmable due to strong currents, but the pool scene and drinks keep the vibe going.
Food & drink
StrongBuffet breakfast is the standout, with themed dinner nights offering solid variety, though the Guacamole steakhouse draws consistent complaints.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Strong breakfast buffet
- Themed dinner nights with variety
- Consistent, friendly room service
Heads up
- Guacamole steakhouse underwhelms
- Dinner hit-or-miss for some
Dining overview
A main buffet handles breakfast, lunch, and rotating dinner themes, supplemented by a handful of à la carte restaurants including a steakhouse. Reviews are mixed: breakfast draws praise, while some dinner venues, including the steakhouse, get lukewarm feedback.
Beach
WeakThe beach is the weak link: coarse sand and dangerous rip tides mean the ocean is for looking, not swimming.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Scenic Sea of Cortez views
Heads up
- Rough, coarse sand
- Rip tide prohibits swimming
- Not a usable swim beach
The resort fronts a stretch of Sea of Cortez coastline with rough, coarse sand and a strong rip current that makes ocean swimming unsafe. It's fine for walks and views, but pool time is where most guests spend their days.

Pools
StrongThe pool scene carries the resort, with a popular swim-up bar and social energy that keeps guests happy all day.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Fun swim-up bar
- Wide drink variety at the pool
- Lively social atmosphere
Heads up
- Drinks can pour weak
Pools are a highlight, with a swim-up bar that gets consistent praise. The vibe around the pool leans lively, especially during Riu's signature themed parties.

Amenities & activities
Couples
Good fitA reliable pick for anniversaries and birthdays, with room decor surprises, deep soaking tubs, and a lively atmosphere that keeps couples engaged.
high confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Rooms with separate bathtubs

What you'll enjoy
- All-ages policy
- Pool area suitable for older kids
Heads up
- No kids club
- Rough sand and rip tide rule out ocean swimming
- Party atmosphere not tuned to young children
Peace & Quiet
WeakThis is a lively, entertainment-forward Riu, not a retreat. Expect Riu Parties, animation teams, and energetic pool scenes.
medium confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Fun animation team with real personality
- Consistent entertainment schedule
Heads up
- Riu Parties dominate the vibe
- Not a peaceful escape
Expect the standard Riu package: pools, swim-up bar, nightly entertainment, and daytime activities led by an energetic animation team. Some guests wish more activities were included beyond the party programming.

“This place was a huge disappointment, and I left wanting to get a refund.

Pros: There are a lot of pools. You can walk over to the neighboring resorts. The bar stays open until midnight.

Cons: It's supposed to be a newer hotel, but it looks tired and run-down. There was vomit on the staircases by the Elite section for hours. That tells you everything about how this place is run.

The staff is rude, and I don't think it was random. I've stayed at Hotel Riu Palace Kukulkan,...”

“This is my first time at this hotel. I've stayed at other Riu hotels in other cities, including the Riu Santa Fe and Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas. This hotel is very large, the rooms are beautiful and very clean, and all the restaurants have very efficient staff. Congratulations to everyone who works here; they make our vacations truly enjoyable.”

“We really enjoyed our experience here! The hotel set up our room beautifully on my wife's birthday. The nightly shows were enjoyable. The food was pretty good, especially the Asian restaurant.”

Know before you book
- weak drinks
- inconsistent dinner quality, including the steakhouse
- rough beach with dangerous rip current
- noisy or hard-to-regulate AC units
What you should know
What to Know
Come for the pool and parties, not the ocean, and expect a few room quirks you may need to flag to the front desk.
medium confidence
What you'll enjoy
- Ask about complimentary upgrades at check-in
- Themed dinner nights worth planning around
- Entertainment team is a highlight, engage with them
Heads up
- Ocean swimming not permitted due to rip tide
- AC units can be loud and hard to regulate
- Maintenance requests can be slow
- Drinks pour light, order doubles
WATCH OUT: Seasonal heads-up
- Summer and early fall (June to October) bring peak heat and Pacific hurricane season risk
- Winter months can have cooler evenings and occasional windy days along the coast
The airport (SJD) is roughly a 20 to 30 minute drive depending on traffic. Bring reef shoes if you plan to walk the beach, as the sand is coarse, and don't count on swimming in the ocean. Tipping in USD or pesos is appreciated, especially for bartenders and the entertainment team.
Good to know
- Ocean swimming is not safe here due to strong rip currents
- The Riu-branded parties are a big part of the nightly entertainment
- Drinks are generous in pour count but reported as light on alcohol
- Breakfast buffet is a consistent standout
- Air conditioning performance can be uneven, worth requesting a check at arrival
