Why travelers love it

“Small, walkable family retreat with swim-up suites and butler service”

This is the family-friendly sister to Margaritaville's adults-only Cancun property, and its smaller footprint is genuinely part of the appeal: everything is a short walk, staff learn your name quickly, and the beach sits just steps from most rooms. Butler service, a drop-off kids' club, and multi-bedroom swim-up suites make it a comfortable pick for families who want space without a sprawling mega-resort.

Food & drink

Mixed

Food is a mixed bag: the two reservation-only restaurants land well, but the non-reservation options run mediocre with slow service until staff recognize you.

Dining overview

A mix of buffet-style and reservation-only restaurants plus a well-liked coffee shop for fresh snacks and sandwiches throughout the day. Reviews are mixed: reservation venues tend to be the stronger meals, while the walk-in options can feel slower and more ordinary, especially at busy times.

Beach

Standout

The beach is a genuine highlight: a three-minute walk from the swim-up suites and repeatedly called marvellous.

Editorial beach rating

Guests describe a clean, easily accessible stretch of Riviera Maya beach right off the resort, with a short walk from most rooms to the sand.

Pools

Strong

Swim-up suites are the pool story here, letting you step from your room into the water; larger dedicated pool amenities go largely unmentioned.

Detailed pool reporting coming soon.

Rooms & suites

Swim-up suites are a standout, and two-bedroom layouts comfortably accommodate families of five. Rooms are described as spacious, clean, and close to the beach.

Swim-Up Paradise Junior Suite

Junior suite layout with direct swim-up access to a shared lagoon pool from the terrace. One of the smaller swim-up categories, aimed at couples or small families who want pool-at-your-doorstep access without paying for the full suite footprint.

What’s included

Strong

You're paying premium for butler service, swim-up suites, and a compact walkable layout; food inconsistency is the main thing keeping it from feeling flawless.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Stretch

Couples can enjoy the swim-up suites and butler touches, but this is the family sister property, so expect kids in the pools and public spaces.

Families

Ideal

A genuinely family-friendly small resort with a drop-off kids club, craft activities, and two-bedroom swim-up suites that fit parties of five comfortably.

Peace & Quiet

Strong

Small footprint and low guest count keep the vibe serene rather than partying, even with kids on property.

A drop-off kids' club and organized art and craft activities keep younger guests busy, while butlers help with dinner reservations, room decoration for special occasions, and day-to-day requests.

What past guests say

“It's a pretty Americanized but nice place. The entire staff are wonderful people and made our stay very pleasant. Even though it's a hotel geared towards foreigners, they never made us feel left out, just like Mexicans.
It was amazing to spend time with Itzel, Joseph, Osvaldo, and the whole entertainment team. Everything was great during our stay; we even had a minor issue, and the staff was incredibly helpful.”

“Nice high class hotel, with a few things for improvement.
The Spa treatments amazing, relaxing from the beginning to the end perfect. Friendly Staff everywhere. Delicious food and many food choices. Glutenfree is cooked separately. One thing is on rainydays rooms needs to be fixed soo because it was raining into the restaurants one day. Kids club is available with good and changing activities. Good Cocktails.”

“The place is very nice, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is excellent with a great variety. The drinks are good too. The location is a bit far and not ideal for someone who wants to be close to Cancun city or the hotel zone, but if you want to disconnect and enjoy yourself, the hotel is perfect. The nighttime activities are good.”

“Thinking about booking here? Do it! We are here for our first time. We have done 2 Margaritaville cruises and have come to really like the brand. If you appreciate Jimmy Buffet, you will love this place! The resort is spectacular! They put a ton of work into the maintenance and it shows. Food has been excellent. The resort is not in the hotel zone, so don't expect to leave the resort on foot. We are here in the off-season (last week of October) but the weather has been fine. If you just want...”

Ask Rosie

Have a specific question about Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Cancun?

Rosie answers from this resort’s guest reviews and our research — with quotes.

Know before you book

 • Service at walk-in restaurants can be slow until staff recognize you
 • Food quality at non-reservation venues is hit or miss
 • Long access road makes off-site walking impossible
 • Smaller resort with fewer amenities than nearby mega-properties

What you should know

What to Know

This is the family property, not the adults-only Margaritaville next door, and the resort sits at the end of a very long access road so you'll Uber anywhere off-site.

CUN nearest airport~45 min transfer

WATCH OUT: Seasonal heads-up

 • Sargassum seaweed can affect Riviera Maya beaches from roughly April through August
 • Peak humidity and hurricane season runs June through November

The resort sits at the end of a long access road, so walking off-property is not realistic; plan on Ubers or taxis for any outings. Tipping visibly improves service at the casual restaurants, according to repeat guests. Book reservation-only restaurants early in your stay, and request a swim-up suite at booking if that is a priority.

Good to know

 • Butler service is included and guests praise it for reservations and small celebrations
 • Drop-off kids' club with organized activities for children
 • The resort is compact and easy to walk end-to-end, including to the beach
 • Isolated location means you'll need Uber or taxis to leave the property
 • This is the family property; there is a separate adults-only Margaritaville nearby
