Food & drink

Mixed

Buffets carry the show with wide variety and standout themed nights like the Asian dinner, though à la cartes are a stressful line-up game and flavor can feel middle-of-the-road.

Dining overview

Multiple buffet meals throughout day with live cooking stations; three themed buffets weekly; and four à la carte specialty restaurants (Steakhouse, Mexican, Italian, Asian); formal dress required for dinner.

Beach

Mixed

A gorgeous stretch of sand with magnificent Sea of Cortez views, but the surf is too rough and deep for swimming, so it's a beach for looking, not for jumping in.

Editorial beach rating

The resort borders El Médano beach but the section directly in front has strong undertow and is not safe for swimming. Guests are advised to walk east toward public beach for safer water.

Pools

Strong

Multiple heated pools including an adults-only option and a fun infinity pool anchor the resort, with swim-up bars close by and a party atmosphere at the main pools.

Editorial pool rating

Ten outdoor pools including five swim‑up bar pools, a children’s water‑park (Splash Water World), party pool with Riu Pool Parties, children’s pool with slides, relaxation and infinity pools.

What’s included

Strong

For the price point, this delivers a lot: renovated rooms, endless drinks, entertainment, and a water park. Just don't expect five-star polish or top-shelf liquor.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Stretch

Fine for a fun, party-leaning couple's getaway, but not the spot for a romantic honeymoon or milestone anniversary given the young, loud crowd.

Families

Good fit

The water park, Kids Club, and nightly kids shows make this a legitimate family pick, but the party crowd mixed throughout the resort means earplugs and building selection matter.

Peace & Quiet

Weak

This is a lively, party-forward Riu with themed pool parties, EDM sets, and 2–4 AM hallway noise; peace-seekers should look next door to Riu Palace or Baja California.

Includes Renova Spa, fitness center, sauna, steam bath, whirlpool, RiuLand kids’ club, daytime and nightly entertainment, nightclub Pacha access, beach area, water‑park, gym classes.

What past guests say

“The food is awful, raw, tasteless, and a waste of a trip spent sweating your brow to eat such filth.”

“The pools are great, the party is fun, the service and the food is trash. Spend a little more money and go somewhere else.”

“This hotel is very nice, but be warned the hotel can be loud (I didn't research enough and it is considered the Party Hotel). They have parties 4 nights a week, but thankfully some end by 7 PM. Overall, the hotel rooms are very clean, the staff are great. We just had okay weather. The infinity pool is nice, but the beach is just okay. The beach was closed a couple days because of weather. It was fun seeing the cruise ships coming and going”

What you should know

What to Know

This is a massive property with no elevators, no phone or app reservations for à la cartes, and a young party crowd baked into the fabric. Pick your building carefully and pack earplugs.

WATCH OUT: Seasonal heads-up

  • Hurricane season runs June through November, with September and October the most active
  • Spring break (late February through March) brings a heavy party crowd
  • Whale-watching season runs roughly mid-December through April off Cabo

Fly into Los Cabos International (SJD); transfers run about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic. Specialty restaurant reservations are first-come, first-served in person — show up before opening if you want a table. Ask for Building 7 if stairs or noise from the pool party area are concerns; it's reportedly the only building with an elevator. Tipping isn't required but is appreciated, especially at the bars where it noticeably improves service.

Good to know

  • Most buildings have no elevator — request Building 7 if you need one
  • Specialty restaurants are walk-up only; arrive early or stick with the buffet
  • On swimmable Medano Beach, but expect persistent beach vendors
  • Resort skews lively/party — not the right pick for travelers seeking a quiet escape
  • About a 10-minute drive or 20-minute walk to downtown Cabo San Lucas
