Food & drink

Mixed

Food is solid if unspectacular: the buffet and Coco Café win consistent praise, but à la carte venues like Gaucho steakhouse and the Japanese restaurant deliver bland steaks, cold plates, and long waits.

Dining overview

Offers a variety of unlimited à la carte gourmet restaurants, a buffet, a café, and 24‑hour dining with top‑shelf spirits—all included under Unlimited‑Luxury®.

Beach

Weak

The beach is the resort's Achilles heel right now: small, rocky in spots, and buried under sargassum that goes uncleared for days, with the stench reaching pools and rooms. Book elsewhere if beach time is non-negotiable.

Editorial beach rating

A dedicated 650‑foot stretch of white‑sand beach with calm, shallow water and ample space for families.

Pools

Mixed

Four pools with a swim-up bar handle overflow when the beach is unusable, but none are adults-only, all fill with kids, and the sargassum stench drifts in on bad days.

Editorial pool rating

Four outdoor pools spread across the property, including a main activity pool with swim-up bar and a quieter pool toward the beach. There's also a hot tub, though it gets crowded with kids, and pool temperatures can feel cool outside of peak summer.

What’s included

Mixed

You pay mid-tier Cancun prices for a dated property where service carries the experience; when the beach fails, the value case collapses fast.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Stretch

Anniversaries and honeymoons find real romance here through Bali beds, beach dinners, and couples spa packages, but the family-heavy crowd and lack of any adults-only space break the mood for pure romance seekers.

Families

Good fit

Built for families with an Explorers Club, thematic parties, cinema, and karaoke, though older kids age out fast and management has clashed with parents traveling with infants.

Peace & Quiet

Weak

The vibe is lively family-resort energy with entertainment staff like Alex, Jayden, and Carlos keeping the party going, so light sleepers and solo travelers seeking calm will feel out of place.

Includes Explorer’s Club for kids, spa, fitness center, non‑motorized water sports, Ocean Trampoline, ocean volleyball, live nightly entertainment and excursions.

What past guests say

“The shower water temperature kept changing, but the staff was excellent. The sea was beautiful, but the beach area was limited.”

“The staff is what makes this place special. Luis by the preferred pool beach is AMAZING! Sergio and Abrahms are top notch servers and some of the best we ever had. But the entire staff was exceptional. Thanks for a lovely trip.”

“My experience at Dreams Sands Cancun was good in terms of service. The staff is excellent; everyone is very kind, attentive, and friendly, always smiling and eager to make you feel welcome.

However, there is one aspect I think the hotel could improve: the beach. If you come to Cancun looking to enjoy a beautiful beach with enough sand to relax and enjoy the sea, this hotel might not be the best option. The beach is quite neglected and has very little sand, making it difficult to enjoy...”

What you should know

What to Know

Expect aggressive timeshare and day-pass sales pitches, a Preferred upgrade that underdelivers, and only two working elevators for ten floors; also note this is a family resort with no adults-only anything.

WATCH OUT: Seasonal heads-up

 • Sargassum seaweed can wash ashore from roughly April through August, though Cancun's Hotel Zone is generally less affected than the Riviera Maya
 • Hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk in September and October
 • Spring break (late February through March) brings a younger, louder crowd to the Hotel Zone

Kids must be potty-trained for Explorer’s Club. Spa and some fitness classes may cost extra. No wristbands required. Reservations not needed for dining.

Good to know

 • Preferred Club upgrade is worth considering for the quieter pool, beach bed service, and El Patio breakfast
 • Hotel Zone location means walking distance to shops, bars, and party district nightlife — expect lively energy, not seclusion
 • Chair-saving with towels at the pools is a real issue; arrive early or claim shaded loungers
 • Specialty restaurants are inconsistent — the Mexican and grill venues are the strongest
 • Sip, Savor & See program lets guests dine at participating sister resorts at no extra cost
