Why travelers love it

“Family-friendly Hyatt Inclusive resort on one of Punta Cana's prettiest, seaweed-free beaches”

Macao Beach is the standout here: soft sand, a gentle slope into the water, and far less sargassum than resorts further south. The Explorer's Club for kids, the teen zone, and enthusiastic entertainment staff (guests name-check them repeatedly) make it a strong pick for families, though the Preferred Club upgrade is what most reviewers say elevated their stay.

Food & drink

Mixed

Food is the weak link at an otherwise strong property: serviceable variety that keeps everyone fed, but nothing that stands out as memorable.

Dining overview

A mix of a large buffet and several themed a la carte restaurants covering Italian, Pan-Asian, French, seafood, and Mexican, plus a beach grill. Reviews describe the food as solid rather than exceptional, but broad enough that families with picky eaters find plenty of options.

Beach

Standout

Macao Beach is the headline act: soft smooth sand, a gentle slope into the water, and no seaweed or rocks, which is remarkable for this coastline.

Editorial beach rating

Macao Beach is wide, powder-soft, and slopes gently into calm, clear water with no rocky patches. It consistently sees less sargassum than the Bavaro strip to the south, which is one of the resort's biggest draws.

Pools

Strong

Multiple pools including a coveted adults-only Preferred Club pool, though loungers on the main side can vanish on peak days.

Editorial pool rating

Several pools spread across the property, including a dedicated adults-only Preferred Club pool that guests single out as a favorite, plus a family pool with a swim-up bar. Loungers can be hard to snag on busy days unless you're in the Preferred Club section, where availability is actively managed.

Rooms & suites

~500 rooms

Rooms are contemporary with private balconies or terraces, walk-in rain showers, and generally comfortable beds. Preferred Club categories add upgraded amenities, a private lounge, and better locations closer to the beach and adults-only pool.

What’s included

Strong

The base experience is solid, but Preferred Club is what unlocks the property: guaranteed loungers, adults-only pool access, and a noticeably better lounge experience.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Good fit

An adults-only Preferred Club pool, spa treatments, and a lively evening scene give couples plenty of room to unwind even inside a family resort.

Families

Ideal

A genuine family win: gentle sloping beach, engaging kids entertainers, and enough activity to keep ages 7 to 10 occupied all day.

Peace & Quiet

Mixed

Lively rather than serene: expect animated entertainment teams, wedding parties, and full pools, with the adults-only pool as the main quieter refuge.

The Explorer's Club for kids ages 3 to 12, a teen Core Zone, a full-service spa, fitness center, and nightly live entertainment and shows. Non-motorized watersports are included, and the resort has a wedding gazebo that stays busy year-round.

What past guests say

“My wife and I went here for 4 days for a relatives wedding celebration. We had a great time for sure but got sick on our trip thanks to the Petri dish we were in during the flight. HAHA
Check in was great as well as the Amstar staff who drove us to and from the airport. Just an FYI, if other people are on the van and at a different resort, you will go through some sketchy areas. We almost felt guilty spending the money we did on our trip after seeing the poverty level.
We got room 1100...”

What you should know

What to Know

Book Preferred Club if the details matter to you: it's actively enforced, gets you the adults-only pool, and secures your lounger. Come for the beach, not the cuisine.

PUJ nearest airport~40 min transfer

WATCH OUT: Seasonal heads-up

 • Sargassum seaweed can still appear April through August, though Macao Beach is typically less affected than Bavaro
 • Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk August to October

Punta Cana Airport (PUJ) is roughly 40 minutes away by transfer; the Macao area is more isolated than Bavaro, so plan on eating at the resort or booking excursions rather than walking to outside restaurants. Tipping is not required but appreciated, especially for the entertainment team and pool staff. If you can stretch to Preferred Club, guests overwhelmingly say it's worth it here for the pool access, lounge, and better chair availability.

Good to know

 • Macao Beach has notably less sargassum than most Punta Cana beaches, but conditions still vary by season
 • Preferred Club is repeatedly called out as worth the upgrade for pool access and chair availability
 • The resort is fairly isolated: expect to spend your time on-property or on booked excursions
 • Entertainment staff get glowing mentions by name in review after review
 • Food is described as good variety but not gourmet, even at the a la carte venues
