Why travelers love it

“A serene family-friendly all-inclusive set directly on Akumal’s pristine white-sand beach.”

The location is the headline act: Akumal Bay is one of the best snorkeling beaches on the Riviera Maya, with sea turtles and a live coral reef just steps from the rooms. It's an intimate, low-key property where attentive staff and a relaxed Mayan-village feel matter more than flashy mega-resort amenities.

Food & drink

Strong

À la carte restaurants are the real draw here, with the steakhouse, sushi bar and Nuovola's crema Catalana pulling consistent praise; the buffet is merely serviceable and can slip toward bland or repetitive.

Dining overview

Dining includes an international buffet with nightly themes, four specialty à la carte restaurants (Mexican, Italian, gourmet, grilled), a beachfront sushi bar, Pelicanos snack bar, lobby bar, and 24‑hour room service.

Beach

Strong

The bay itself is beautiful, calm and great for snorkeling, but Akumal sits in a sargassum-prone stretch of Riviera Maya and summer stays can mean seaweed piled ankle-deep despite tireless raking crews. Timing your visit outside peak sargassum months matters here.

Editorial beach rating

Akumal Bay itself is a standout — nearly a mile of soft white sand fronting a protected bay famous for sea turtles and snorkeling on a live reef just offshore. Sargassum can wash in seasonally, but reviewers consistently note the resort works hard to keep the beach cleared.

Pools

Strong

The recently renovated main pool is clean, uncrowded and easy to find a lounger at, even in high season. It is a relaxed sunbathing pool, not an activity-and-swim-up-bar scene.

Editorial pool rating

Multiple beachfront and garden pools; no swim‑up bar; quiet, relaxed ambiance.

What’s included

Strong

For a small, well-kept, oceanfront resort with strong service and à la cartes included, the price-to-experience ratio genuinely lands. Upgrading to Premium (Building 3) is where the value equation gets debated.

Package inclusions and upgrade access have not been collected yet. Confirm them for your room and dates when booking.

Amenities & activities

Couples

Good fit

A quiet, romantic pick for anniversaries, honeymoons and small beach weddings, with ocean-view rooms, in-room jacuzzis and nightly live music setting the mood. It leans peaceful rather than sultry-adults-only, so expect families in the mix.

Families

Good fit

A calm, walkable, multi-generational favorite where kids club staff (Karla in particular) get called out by name and the compact layout keeps everyone close. Better suited to families wanting a relaxed pace than to those chasing waterparks or big kid programming.

Peace & Quiet

Standout

This is emphatically not a party resort: think meditation and sound-healing with Franco, yoga three times a day, and evenings of acoustic live music rather than foam parties. Guests who want tranquility consistently call it a hidden gem.

Extensive all-inclusive with international buffet, four specialty à la carte restaurants, 24‑hour room service, multiple bars, kids club, spa, fitness centre, tennis court, and guided beachfront snorkeling.

What you should know

What to Know

Book Building 2 or 3 for renovated rooms and shortest walks to the beach, pool and restaurants, and check sargassum forecasts before locking in summer dates. The pool closes at 8 PM, cocktails come strawless, and Tulum airport is now the faster arrival option.

WATCH OUT: Seasonal heads-up

  • Sargassum seaweed can wash up between roughly April and August along the Riviera Maya
  • Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peaking September–October

Reservations are not required for the à la carte restaurants. The resort has a kids' club for children ages 4-12, and snorkeling is a popular activity directly off the beach.

Good to know

  • Akumal Bay is one of the few places in the Riviera Maya where you can reliably snorkel with sea turtles right off the beach
  • Smaller, more intimate property — not a mega-resort with endless pools and venues
  • All rooms reportedly have ocean views and a balcony hot tub after the refurbishment
  • Daily yoga and meditation are included
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is required for snorkeling in the bay
